5th December 2024If you are like me who spends hours researching ways to deal with your mental health, then there is a slight chance that you might have heard of the term C-B-T!
CBT, or Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, is a form of psychotherapy designed to address stress through a combination of cognitive and behavioral techniques. In simpler terms, it helps us to change our thinking and behavior to manage our issues.
For hundreds of years, psychologists have used this therapy to treat a wide range of mental health issues. It helps to deal with many mental health disorders including anxiety, stress, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, eating disorders, etc.
There are many reasons why you should know about CBT. I have listed the top 5 below:
Before we get into the reasons, a quick personal story: Online Therapy introduced me to the concept of CBT. This was during the COVID era. During earlier sessions, my therapist explained how our minds work (in a scientific and entertaining way). Then he continued to tell me about the link between our thoughts and feelings. Though I had to stop therapy, I kept working on myself with CBT techniques and it has helped me a lot. My proudest achievement through CBT- I started loving myself the way I have always wanted to be loved. Not going to lie, the journey was difficult and frustrating but I got there!!
CBT is a proven and effective therapy
CBT is a proven and effective therapy because it helps you to identify and reframe negative beliefs and thoughts, allowing you to gain control of your emotions and behaviors. It has been used to treat these conditions for decades, so it’s no surprise that it works so well. The reason CBT works so well is that it focuses on changing your thoughts and beliefs rather than just taking medications or trying to manage symptoms.
Increased Self-Awareness and Understanding
CBT is structured psychotherapy that helps you identify the thoughts and feelings that lead to your distress. You can learn to identify your triggers and then find ways to avoid them in the future. For example, if someone says something about you that’s hurtful or negative, it may trigger an emotion like anger or sadness. In this case, CBT teaches you how to let go of this response so it doesn’t affect your mood or behavior anymore.
CBT also helps people understand their strengths and apply them over time so they can get more out of life while making fewer mistakes along the way!
Better Coping Skills in Stressful Situations
If your job or school is stressful, you know how it feels to be under pressure. You may feel tense, anxious, and unable to relax. CBT is a proven therapy that can help you cope with stress.
To learn coping skills, you need training. Training teaches people how to manage their emotions so they’re not so extreme during everyday challenges. It also teaches them how to react when someone else acts aggressively toward them.
CBT is flexible, with no set treatment plan required
CBT is a flexible therapy and can be used in many different ways. It doesn’t require you to follow a set treatment plan.
The most significant thing about CBT is that it works! It’s flexible and doesn’t need a set treatment plan — you can use it before or after work hours or during breaks. If you have been struggling for some time now, then it’s time you consider getting help from a professional therapist.
More flexible thinking patterns
Flexible thinking patterns can be developed through CBT which can lead to better problem-solving skills and improved mental health. CBT is based on the idea that our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are all connected, so it helps to identify and change any unhelpful patterns. It can also help reduce stress, anxiety, and depression. Cognitive behavioral therapy is a flexible type of therapy that can be used to treat a wide range of mental health issues, including:
- Depression
- Anxiety disorders (including panic attacks)
- Obsessive-compulsive behavior and related disorders like body dysmorphic disorder and trichotillomania (hair pulling).
CBT is a proven treatment for many mental health conditions, and it’s very effective at helping people overcome their problems. The idea behind CBT is that the way you think affects your emotions, which affect the way you feel and behave. By changing the way you think about yourself and your world, you can change the way you act — and this is what I mean when I say that CBT works. Through my own journey, I had to challenge the way I perceived myself at every stage. This helped me change the way I spoke to myself and eventually, the way I felt about myself.
